Organizational Setting

The Department of Safeguards carries out the IAEA's duties and responsibilities as the world's nuclear inspectorate, supporting global efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons. Operations Divisions and the Office for Verification in Iran perform and document safeguards verification activities and conduct analysis and evaluations aimed at providing assurances that States comply with their nuclear safeguards commitments.

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Section Head through the Senior Inspector for Coordination, the Safeguards Coordination Associate serves as the focal point for communication, administrative support and services related to the Committees and Working Groups of the IAEA/European Commission Liaison Committee.

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • Facilitate IAEA and European Commission reviews, responses and reconciliation of issues impacting new or changed safeguards cooperation agreements in European Union States.
  • Ensure effective liaison with internal and external stakeholders including the Director General's Office, the Office of Legal Affairs and European Commission representatives.
  • Support the organization of IAEA/EC meetings, including invitations, travel arrangements, preparatory documents, meeting logistics and visitor access.
  • Take and prepare minutes of meetings and update action lists for each IAEA/EC Committee and Working Group.
  • Compile, process and update classified data from import communications and nuclear material advance import/export notifications.
  • Analyse advance notifications and incorporate detailed data into the transit matching database.
  • Draft and prepare documents and official correspondence with States.
  • Prepare and oversee the review and approval of State Subsidiary Arrangements and Facility Attachments.
  • Maintain divisional radiation protection records and follow up on compliance requirements.

Required Expertise

  • Solid understanding and preferably practical experience with document management systems and procedures and the treatment of confidential and sensitive information.
  • Working experience with MS Office applications and databases.
  • Familiarity with sources of safeguards relevant information is an asset.
  • Understanding or experience with MOSAIC related applications relevant to State Level Approach tasks is an asset.

Qualifications, Experience and Language Skills

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Minimum of six years of relevant working experience in an administrative support role, including organizing meetings, coordinating documentation, drafting correspondence and minutes, and working with databases.
  • Proven knowledge of radiation safety administrative procedures and familiarity with EURATOM is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages is an asset.

Remuneration

Ihre Inspektorinnen und Inspektoren reisen um die Welt und prüfen nach, dass Uran und Plutonium dort bleiben, wo sie hingehören: in der friedlichen Nutzung. Andere Fachleute der IAEA helfen, mit nuklearer Technik sauberes Trinkwasser in Städte zu bringen, Ernten zu sichern oder Krebs zu behandeln. Seit 1957 arbeitet die Organisation unter dem Leitgedanken „Atoms for Peace“. Der Sitz ist Wien.

Die IAEA ist eine eigenständige internationale Organisation im System der Vereinten Nationen, gegründet 1957 und heute getragen von 181 Mitgliedstaaten. Ihr Auftrag klingt schlicht und ist enorm: dafür zu sorgen, dass Kerntechnik dem Frieden dient und nicht dem Krieg. Rund 2.500 Menschen aus mehr als 100 Ländern arbeiten daran mit, die meisten am Hauptsitz im Wiener Vienna International Centre.

Die Bandbreite der Berufe ist groß. In der Abteilung Safeguards werten Analystinnen Mess- und Satellitendaten aus, während Inspektoren vor Ort in Kernanlagen das Material verifizieren. In den Laboren im niederösterreichischen Seibersdorf und in Monaco untersuchen Wissenschaftler Boden-, Wasser- und Meeresproben. Ärztinnen und Medizinphysiker bringen Strahlentherapie in Länder, in denen der Zugang zur Krebsbehandlung knapp ist. Dazu kommen Ingenieure für Reaktorsicherheit, Juristen, Übersetzer und Verwaltungsfachleute. Sechs Fachdepartments decken das ab, von den Nuklearwissenschaften über Kernenergie und nukleare Sicherheit bis zur technischen Zusammenarbeit mit ärmeren Ländern.

Wer hier anfängt, arbeitet international im Wortsinn. Neben Wien unterhält die Agentur Verbindungsbüros in New York und Genf, Regionalbüros in Toronto und Tokio und ein gemeinsam mit Triest betriebenes Forschungszentrum. Die Gehälter folgen dem einheitlichen System der Vereinten Nationen, das Kollegium kommt aus über hundert Nationen. Geleitet wird die Organisation seit Dezember 2019 von Generaldirektor Rafael Grossi. 2005 erhielt die IAEA gemeinsam mit ihrem damaligen Generaldirektor den Friedensnobelpreis.
