Am 1. September 1977 sperrte in der Shopping City Süd bei Wien das erste IKEA Einrichtungshaus Österreichs auf. „Das unmögliche Möbelhaus" hieß es damals in der Werbung. Fast ein halbes Jahrhundert später zählt IKEA in Österreich mit rund 3.600 Beschäftigten zu den größten Arbeitgebern im heimischen Möbelhandel.

Das Geschäft ist rasch erklärt: IKEA verkauft Möbel und Einrichtung, die sich viele Menschen leisten können. Der Firmensitz der IKEA Austria GmbH liegt in Vösendorf südlich von Wien, dort, wo alles begann. Acht Einrichtungshäuser betreibt das Unternehmen quer durch Österreich, dazu sieben kleinere Planungsstudios in den Städten, vierzehn Abholstationen und zwei Logistikzentren. Am Wiener Westbahnhof steht seit 2021 ein Haus mitten in der Stadt, ganz ohne Kundenparkplätze und konsequent auf Nachhaltigkeit ausgelegt.

Wer hier anfängt, kann sehr unterschiedliche Wege gehen. Auf der Verkaufsfläche beraten Einrichtungsberaterinnen und -berater zu Küchen und Schlafzimmern, im Hochregallager sorgen Logistikkräfte dafür, dass die Ware rechtzeitig ankommt, und im Restaurant stehen Köchinnen und Servicekräfte hinter der Theke. Dazu kommen Planung, Kundenservice, Einkauf und Verwaltung. IKEA Österreich ist Teil der internationalen Ingka Group, die weltweit rund 160.000 Menschen beschäftigt. Diese Größe steht hinter jedem einzelnen Standort.

Stabilität ist bei IKEA mehr als ein Versprechen. Während der Corona-Pandemie hielt das Unternehmen alle Beschäftigten im Job, ohne Kurzarbeit und ohne staatliche Hilfe. Gewachsen ist es trotzdem weiter. Für Herbst 2027 ist in Dornbirn ein neues Haus im Format „Small Store" geplant, mit rund 170 Arbeitsplätzen. Aus einem Möbelhaus in Vösendorf sind in gut vier Jahrzehnten Standorte in mehreren Bundesländern geworden.
