AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH

Scientist (f/m/d) for Designing, Testing and Qualifying Next Generation Aeronautical Batteries

CENTER FOR TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGIES

As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, AIT is dedicated to making substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitalisation. The Research Group Hybrid Electric Aircraft Technologies, part of the Center for Transport Technologies, is looking for new Ingenious Partners for the location in Wien.

As a member of the growing team, you will contribute to cutting-edge research and the implementation of ambitious, large-scale European research projects that advance the next generation of aeronautical batteries.

Your Responsibilities

  • You will support the development of next generation batteries for aeronautical applications, from cell selection, module and pack design, prototype assembly, testing and qualification.
  • Depending on your background, you will develop and test physics-based AI/ML methods, numerical methods and tools for reliable battery state prediction, or high-voltage/high-power and light-weight battery prototypes including structural batteries and multifunctional electrical energy storage.
  • You will interface with experienced scientists and engineers in aerospace across Europe.
  • You will work closely with European Institutions and international partners from research organisations and industry on multi-annual large-scale collaborative projects.
  • You will build your own network, contribute to defining the strategic research direction and prepare proposals for new projects.
  • You will publish your results in high-ranking journals and support other scientists in doing so.
  • You will supervise PhD and master's students.

Your Qualifications

  • PhD-level qualification in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline, with a focus on battery design and testing, preferably for high-voltage/high-power aerospace applications.
  • Alternatively, an MSc-level qualification combined with relevant professional experience may be accepted.
  • A traceable scientific publication record and experience publishing in high-ranking peer-reviewed journals are required.
  • Proven experience in physics-based AI/ML methods in applied engineering, high voltage/high power electrical design and testing, light-weight design and testing, or hybrid-electric and more-electric systems and aircraft architecture design.
  • Programming skills in Python, MATLAB including Simulink, C/C++ or similar languages are required.
  • Knowledge of battery electrochemistry and battery modelling methodologies, simulation tools such as ANSYS, Modelica or Dymola, and experience in battery testing at cell, module and pack level are valued.
  • Experience in industrial projects and European research programmes such as Horizon Europe or Clean Aviation is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, including technical writing, are mandatory. Knowledge of German is desirable.

What to Expect

  • The minimum gross annual salary on a full-time basis of 38.5 hours per week according to the collective agreement is EUR 61.334. The actual salary will be determined individually based on qualifications and experience.
  • Benefits include canteen and meal allowance, organic coffee, tea and fruit baskets, preventive healthcare and company doctor, pension fund, additional days off, family benefits, voucher programme, sports, cultural and social events, flexitime models including up to 50% home office, travel support for conferences and individual training and career development opportunities.
  • The expected starting date is Q4 2026 or Q1 2027. Applications are accepted until September 30th, 2026 at 12:00 CET.

Please submit your application online with CV, letter of motivation and proof of identity.
