Postdoc (f/m/x) in the ALICE 3 outer tracker project

MBI performs a rich experimental particle physics research program, participating in accelerator and non accelerator-based experiments. The institute has major involvement in ALICE and CMS at CERN, the Belle II experiment at KEK and several Dark Matter discovery experiments. A research group works on R&D of particle detectors for those experiments, as well as for their applications in medical imaging. For that, it collaborates with MedAustron, an ion cancer therapy and research center. For an upgrade of the Belle II Vertex Detector and for the future FCCee, we design and develop depleted monolithic active pixel detectors and its associated readout electronics. In this context, MBI  is offering a postdoc position for an initial period of three years, located in Vienna.

Your Tasks

  • Design of the electronics system for the ALICE Outer Tracker readout system, including front-end ASIC chip design in 65nm technology, and back-end electronics based on the FELIX platform
  • Further tasks may include verification and characterization of prototypes in lab tests and particle beam experiments
  • Leadership role within the project, including supervision of Bachelor's, Master’s and PhD students

Your Profile

●      PhD degree in either electronics or physics with a strong background in electronics

●      Previous postdoctoral positions in the domain are strongly desirable

●      Solid background in experimental particle physics

●      Experience in solid-state detector R&D and electronics, with emphasis on

  • FPGA programming
  • ASIC design

●    Skills in Cadence ASIC design flow, PCB design, software and simulations for electronic circuits and device simulations, and knowledge of the interactions of particles with matter are desirable

Schwarze Löcher im Weltall, antike Inschriften, die Mechanik der menschlichen Zelle: An der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften wird an sehr unterschiedlichen Fragen gearbeitet. Rund 1.800 Menschen forschen hier, verteilt auf 26 Institute. Damit ist die ÖAW die größte außeruniversitäre Forschungseinrichtung des Landes.

Gegründet wurde die Akademie 1847, damals als Kaiserliche Akademie der Wissenschaften. Heute betreibt sie Grundlagenforschung in ganzer Breite. In den Life Sciences geht es um die Biologie der Zelle, in der Weltraumforschung um Instrumente für Satellitenmissionen, in den Altertumswissenschaften um Ausgrabungen und antike Texte. Dazu kommen Mathematik, Physik und Materialforschung ebenso wie Sozialforschung und die Digital Humanities. Geforscht wird nicht nur in Wien, wo die Akademie am Dr.-Ignaz-Seipel-Platz ihren Sitz hat, sondern auch an Standorten in Graz, Innsbruck, Linz und Leoben. Die ÖAW ist zugleich eine Gelehrtengesellschaft. Über 760 gewählte Mitglieder gehören ihr an, und sie berät Politik und Gesellschaft in wissenschaftlichen Fragen. Finanziert wird die Arbeit überwiegend aus Bundesmitteln; für die Jahre 2024 bis 2026 stehen laut Wissenschaftsministerium rund 529 Millionen Euro zur Verfügung. Wer hier arbeitet, tut das oft in der Forschung selbst, als Doktorandin, als Postdoc oder als Principal Investigator mit eigener Gruppe. Eine Einrichtung dieser Größe braucht aber genauso Menschen in der Verwaltung, in der IT, in den Bibliotheken und im technischen Betrieb der Labore. Stellen werden laufend ausgeschrieben, viele davon international über EURAXESS. Als Körperschaft öffentlichen Rechts steht die Akademie unter dem Schutz des Bundes und besteht in dieser Form seit mehr als 175 Jahren.
