The Opportunity
We are seeking an outstanding and highly motivated scientist or engineer (f/m/d) to play a leading role in the development and clinical translation of a next-generation optoacoustic imaging platform. This project aims to establish entirely new ways of assessing human wellness and disease, focusing on novel functional and metabolic tissue readings obtained non-invasively. This advance will open opportunities for earlier diagnosis, monitoring, and personalized management of cardio-metabolic disorders.

As part of a multidisciplinary team spanning mathematics, computation and AI, engineering, physics, medicine, and regulatory science, you will contribute to bridging technological innovation with the pathway that brings breakthrough imaging technologies into human studies and clinical practice.

You will have the opportunity to:
• Drive the development of advanced optoacoustic instrumentation and sensing technologies.
• Understand in depth the regulatory and quality-management activities supporting first-in-human studies.
• Contribute to device validation, performance characterization, and clinical translation.
• Collaborate with leading clinical, industrial, and academic partners across Europe.
• Design and implement novel optical, electronic, and system-level solutions.
• Publish in leading journals, present at international conferences, and contribute to intellectual property generation.
• Help redefine how health and disease are assessed in future medicine.

Your profile
We are looking for talented candidates who combine scientific excellence with a passion for translating innovation into real-world impact.

Required qualifications
• Education in Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Medical Technology, Computer Science or related disciplines with a strong academic record.
• An aptitude for navigating the medical device regulatory process.
• Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Optical systems and photonics
    • Lasers and fiber optics
    • Sensors and instrumentation
    • Biomedical imaging technologies
    • Electronics and embedded systems
    • Medical device development
    • Regulatory pathways for medical devices
• Programming experience in MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, or related environments.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication skills and fluency in English.
• Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary teamwork in an international research environment.

Particularly advantageous
• Experience with medical device development or translational research.
• Familiarity with regulatory frameworks, quality management systems, or clinical studies.
• Experience in optoacoustics, ultrasound, optical imaging, spectroscopy, or related technologies.
• Interest in entrepreneurship, innovation transfer, or commercialization.
• Fluency in German and English

Contract and Conditions
The position is initially offered for 2 years, with the possibility of extension and long-term career perspectives based on performance and mutual interests. Compensation is according to TV-L E13 according to the public wage agreement of the Free State of Bavaria (higher levels may be possible for exceptional candidates depending on qualifications and experience). Fast 52.000 Studierende waren im Wintersemester 2025/26 an der Technischen Universität München eingeschrieben. Rund 12.850 Menschen arbeiten für die Universität, und nur ein Teil von ihnen forscht und lehrt. Genauso gebraucht werden technische Fachkräfte an den Laboranlagen in Garching und Verwaltungsleute am Stammgelände in der Münchner Arcisstraße. Angefangen hat das Ganze 1868, als König Ludwig II. eine Polytechnische Schule gründete.

Die TUM ist eine staatliche Universität des Freistaats Bayern, rechtlich eine Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts mit Sitz in München. Ihre Schwerpunkte liegen in den Ingenieur- und Naturwissenschaften, in Informatik, Medizin, Life Sciences und Management. 177 Studiengänge stehen im Programm. 45 Prozent der Studierenden kommen aus dem Ausland, aus rund 140 Ländern, und auch knapp ein Viertel der rund 700 Professuren ist international besetzt. Wer hier arbeitet, hat Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus aller Welt, das ist Alltag und keine Sonntagsrede.

Gearbeitet wird an mehreren Orten. Der größte Campus liegt in Garching nördlich von München, wo Physik, Chemie, Maschinenwesen und Informatik zusammenkommen. In Freising-Weihenstephan drehen sich Forschung und Lehre um Ernährung, Landnutzung und Biotechnologie, in Straubing um Bioökonomie, in Heilbronn um Management und Technik. Luft- und Raumfahrt sitzt in Ottobrunn-Taufkirchen. Dazu betreibt die Universität Forschungsstationen bis hinauf auf die Zugspitze und mit TUM Asia einen eigenen Standort in Singapur. Zur Medizin gehört das Klinikum rechts der Isar, das im Haushalt der Universität allerdings getrennt ausgewiesen wird.

Die finanzielle Basis ist breit: 2024 lag das Gesamtbudget bei 2,171 Milliarden Euro, davon 544 Millionen Euro Drittmittel. 19 Nobelpreise gingen seit 1927 an Forschende und Alumni der TUM. In der Exzellenzstrategie von Bund und Ländern wurde sie 2006, 2012, 2019 und zuletzt 2026 ausgezeichnet, viermal in Folge.

Für Bewerberinnen und Bewerber heißt das konkret: Stellen gibt es in Forschung und Lehre, im Wissenschaftsmanagement, in der Verwaltung und in der Technik. Junge Wissenschaftlerinnen können über den TUM Faculty Tenure Track auf eine Professur zusteuern. Und wer noch am Anfang steht, findet über 20 Ausbildungsberufe an der Universität. Die TUM ist als familiengerechte Hochschule zertifiziert und hat die Charta der Vielfalt unterzeichnet. Geleitet wird sie von Präsident Prof. Dr. Thomas F. Hofmann, der 2025 für weitere sechs Jahre wiedergewählt wurde.
