The research group Atmospheric Transport Processes, led by Prof. Andreas Stohl, is part of the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. The group develops the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART and studies all aspects of transport in the atmosphere, ranging from greenhouse gases to pollutants, water vapour and heat, and uses inverse modelling techniques to determine sources of greenhouse gases, radionuclides, or air pollutants.

We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher who will contribute to the research conducted in the team. While work with the FLEXPART model is expected, candidates can also propose their own research topics, such as theoretical and numerical improvements of FLEXPART, development of new application fields, or novel applications in covered research fields.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research and teaching, which means you will:

  • Contribute to the maintenance and further development of the Lagrangian transport model FLEXPART.
  • Conduct research with FLEXPART on topics within the general interests of the group.
  • Write and contribute to project applications and third-party funding acquisition, and help manage projects.
  • Provide scientific and technical support to team members, FLEXPART co-developers, doctoral and master students.
  • Teach independently within the collective bargaining agreement, including co-supervision of BSc and MSc theses.
  • Publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strengthen the collaborative culture of the team and the Department.

You will require:

  • Completed Ph.D. or doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences, such as meteorology or climatology, or a related field.
  • Strong programming skills.
  • Data analysis and interpretation experience guided by theoretical and physical understanding.
  • A good team spirit and willingness to collaborate.
  • Very good command of English.

These skills would be an advantage:

  • Experience with Lagrangian transport models.
  • Expert programming knowledge, preferably in Python and/or Fortran.

A longer-than-average postdoctoral contract with freedom to choose your specialized research topics: This university-funded position offers more freedom than typical project-funded positions and supports development of a leading research profile.

Fair salary plus health care and social benefits: The gross salary is at least EUR 5.014,30, payable 14 times per year.

The position is available from October 2026, but a later starting time is possible. The review of applications will begin on 07 September 2026. An initial contract for three years is offered and can be extended to six years in total by mutual agreement.
