Your workplace:

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will become part of the Philosophy of Media and Technology group at the Department of Philosophy, led by Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh. It offers a lively and attractive research environment specialized in bringing philosophical concepts, arguments, and approaches to bear on urgent issues concerning new technologies in society, including ethics and political philosophy of artificial intelligence and robotics. The postdoctoral researcher actively participates in the research, teaching and administration of this group.

Your future tasks:

We expect you to actively participate in research, teaching, and administration at the Department of Philosophy and in Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh’s research team. This involves the following:

  • You produce excellent research in philosophy.
  • You take part in and help organizing research activities such as reading groups, workshops, visiting talks.
  • You publish in peer-reviewed journals and give research presentations.
  • You collaborate with Prof. Mark Coeckelbergh on research and assist him with grant proposals.
  • You apply for third-party funding for your research.
  • You prepare and complete a habilitation if this is beneficial to your career.
  • You contribute to teaching within the BA and MA philosophy programs by independently teaching courses to the extent to which you are required according to the collective bargaining agreement.
  • You supervise students in your areas of competence.
  • You participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance.
  • You take on administrative and organizational tasks.

Your profile:

Required:

  • A Ph.D. in philosophy, degree awarded by application deadline.
  • Research focus in philosophy of technology, including but not exclusively ethics of technology, such as ethics of AI.
  • Promising potential for, and evidence of, original high-level research, including an excellent PhD thesis and a beginning publication track record.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English at C2 level.
  • Ability to work in a team.

Desirable:

  • Experience of writing proposals for and or working on research projects, preferably European projects funded by the European Commission.
  • Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media, peer-reviewed international journals in the area of philosophy of technology and/or related areas.
  • Good German language skills or willingness to acquire German language skills.

Fixed-term contract and fair salary: The basic salary of EUR 5,014.30, 14 times a year, for a period of 3 years, renewable for another 3 years to 6 years in total, increases if sufficient professional experience can be credited.
