The employment is initially limited to one year but can subsequently be changed to a permanent position following a positive evaluation.

The Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the University of Vienna aims to understand biological diversity across ecological and evolutionary dimensions. We are looking for a motivated and committed staff member to strengthen our team.

Your areas of responsibility:

The position is based in the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the University of Vienna, within the Evolutionary Plant Cytogenetics research group, located at Rennweg 14, 1030 Wien.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical management of the cytogenetics and genome size measurement laboratory, contribute to FWF-funded and other research projects, and support regular teaching activities.

Your tasks:

  • General laboratory organization and management
  • Management and supervision of the flow cytometry laboratory, including sample measurement, analysis of raw data, conducting experiments, and documenting results for scientific publications
  • DNA extraction and preparation of libraries for NGS (Next Generation Sequencing)
  • Basic analyses of plant chromosomes
  • Technical training and support for students and visiting scientists in the field of flow cytometry
  • Support in the organization and delivery of subject-specific courses
  • Participation in FWF-funded and other research projects

Your profile:

  • Completed relevant degree with a focus on chemistry or molecular biology, or an equivalent qualification
  • Comprehensive IT user skills, for example MS Office and Adobe Illustrator
  • Very good written and verbal communication skills in German and English
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured manner, a service-oriented approach, and the ability to find solutions independently
  • Strong teamwork skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Basic theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular and cell biology
  • Experience in cytology, genome size measurement, karyology, and specifically flow cytometry
