Postdoctoral Researcher in tissue regeneration and stem cell metabolism (m/f/d)

Medizinische Universität Wien

The Medical University of Vienna, Center for Pathobiochemistry and Genetics / Institute of Medical Genetics, is looking for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d), 40 hours per week, to start immediately on a fixed-term contract for two years with the option to extend.

Join the Miller Lab in Vienna, Austria, to investigate how metabolic processes regulate tissue regeneration. The project compares regenerative responses in different tissues, focusing on how nuclear metabolic and epigenetic interactions support changes in cellular state, proliferation, and tissue repair.

Research project

Building on liver regeneration research, the project will extend to tissues with different regenerative strategies, such as muscle, kidney, and pancreas. Additional models can be shaped by the candidate’s scientific interests and expertise.

  • Establish and apply complementary murine regeneration models together with selected stem cell models.
  • Identify tissue-specific mechanisms of regeneration.
  • Develop and optimize additional organ regeneration models.
  • Develop an independent research direction within the project.

State-of-the-art metabolomics, in vivo stable isotope tracing using an Orbitrap mass spectrometer, and multiple liver regeneration models are already established.

What we are looking for

Applicants should hold a PhD in regenerative biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, cell biology, biomedicine, or a related field, with a strong publication record appropriate to their career stage. Early-career postdocs are welcome.

Essential experience

  • Research experience in tissue regeneration, regenerative biology, regenerative medicine, or stem cell biology, particularly involving tissue-resident stem/progenitor cells.
  • Substantial experience working with mouse models.
  • Strong expertise in molecular and cellular biology.
  • Ability to independently design experiments, troubleshoot protocols, analyse data, and develop new experimental approaches.

Desirable experience

  • Surgical or microsurgical experience in mouse models.
  • Experience with kidney, skeletal muscle, pancreatic, or other tissue regeneration models.
  • Omics experience, including data analysis for metabolomics, proteomics, and epigenomic approaches.

Scientific curiosity, technical versatility, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary work are important. Experience in every listed technique is not expected; expertise in regenerative biology and substantial experience with mouse models are essential.

The research environment

The laboratory is located at the Medical University in the heart of Vienna. The international, interdisciplinary team brings together expertise in metabolism, cell and molecular biology, and analytical chemistry, with opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.

Salary and benefits

The minimum monthly salary is EUR 5,014 gross, paid 14 times per year, on a full-time basis under Uni-KV, salary group B1b. Relevant previous experience and job-specific salary components may increase this amount.

Benefits include an employer-sponsored retirement plan, employee discounts, affordable staff restaurants, childcare options, health initiatives, professional development, counseling services, and subsidized annual public transportation passes. Flexible scheduling and telework depend on the job category and individual agreement.

How to apply

Apply by 25 November 2026 using the application form under “Apply now” on the vacancy page. Reference number: 598/26.

  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Letter of motivation describing your research background, expertise in regenerative biology, and interest in the position.
  • Contact details for three referees.
  • List of up to three most relevant publications.

Your application should demonstrate preparation for research in tissue regeneration and stem cell biology. Applications are accepted exclusively through the website form, not by email.
