Your personal sphere of influence

The position is limited to 3 years with the possibility of extending for a further year. The Brain and Language Lab investigates the neurobiological foundations of language and auditory processing, with a focus on individual differences, multilingual and multiliterate experience, language aptitude, dyslexia, brain anatomy and experience-dependent plasticity.

The doctoral project will be developed jointly with the successful candidate and tailored to their methodological background, previous research experience and scientific interests within the broader research areas of the lab. Possible projects may draw on existing multimodal adult datasets, including the NEBULA101 dataset.

  • How multilingual and multiliterate experience, language aptitude and dyslexia relate to brain structure, activation and connectivity.
  • How neural systems supporting visual word-form processing, spoken language, music and spatial navigation are organised and interrelated.
  • Whether individual differences in memory, auditory processing, executive control and navigation reveal markers of risk, resilience or compensatory mechanisms associated with dyslexia.

Your future tasks

  • Developing, conducting and completing a doctoral research project.
  • Finalising the dissertation agreement within 12 to 18 months.
  • Analysing behavioural and neuroscientific data and developing transparent and reproducible analysis workflows.
  • Participating in research projects and scientific studies within the Brain and Language Lab.
  • Preparing international scientific publications and presenting research findings at conferences.
  • Participating in the Vienna Doctoral School in Cognition, Behaviour and Neuroscience.
  • Independently teaching courses and supervising students where appropriate.
  • Contributing to evaluation, quality assurance and administration.

This is part of your personality

  • A completed Master’s degree or equivalent in psychology, biomedical engineering, cognitive neuroscience, neuroscience, cognitive science, computer science, data science, physics or another relevant discipline.
  • Research experience in cognitive neuroscience and with empirical behavioural or neuroscientific data.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, MATLAB or a comparable language.
  • Strong background in statistics and quantitative research methods.
  • Experience with experimental design, data processing and complex datasets.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience with MRI, EEG or MEG.
  • Experience with neuroimaging analysis, connectivity, computational morphometry or signal processing.
  • Experience with multivariate statistics, machine learning or computational modelling.
  • Familiarity with Linux, high-performance computing, version control and reproducible research practices.
  • Previous research on language, reading, auditory processing, multilingualism, individual differences or dyslexia.
  • Teaching, student supervision or research communication experience.
