In Kalsdorf bei Graz entstehen die Batteriesysteme, die später in Elektroautos auf europäischen Straßen unterwegs sind. Samsung SDI Battery Systems entwickelt, testet und industrialisiert Lithium-Ionen-Batteriepacks für Hybrid-, Plug-in-Hybrid- und vollelektrische Fahrzeuge. Die Arbeit an Batteriesystemen begann hier bereits 2007, die erste Serienproduktion lief 2009 an. Seit 2015 gehört der steirische Standort zum koreanischen Batteriekonzern Samsung SDI.
Das Geschäft ist greifbar. Aus Speicherzellen werden Module, aus Modulen komplette Batteriepacks für die Automobilindustrie. Geprüft wird im eigenen Haus: Für Batterie- und Softwaretests stehen laut Unternehmensangaben 75 Prüfkanäle bereit, und für 2025 nennt die Firma 110 angemeldete Patente. 2022 bezog die Belegschaft ein neues Entwicklungs-, Industrialisierungs- und Testzentrum in Kalsdorf, das das Unternehmen selbst als eines der größten Zentren für Batterieentwicklung beschreibt.
Die Geschichte reicht weiter zurück, als der Name vermuten lässt. Als Magna Steyr Battery Systems baute der Betrieb ab 2007 Batteriesysteme für Fahrzeughersteller auf. Im Februar 2015 übernahm Samsung SDI das Unternehmen samt aller 264 Beschäftigten, der Entwicklungs- und Produktionsstandorte und der laufenden Verträge (bestmag.co.uk, 26.02.2015). Seither steht hinter der Entwicklungsarbeit südlich von Graz ein weltweit tätiger Zellhersteller, und die Projekte laufen entsprechend international. Menschen aus rund 30 Nationen arbeiten hier zusammen.
Die Berufsbilder sind breiter, als man bei einem Batteriehersteller erwartet. Im Engineering konstruieren Ingenieurinnen und Ingenieure Packgehäuse und Kühlkonzepte, im Test- und Validierungsbereich fahren Prüfingenieure Batterien bis in den Missbrauchsfall und durch die Homologation, und in der Industrialisierung wird aus dem Prototyp eine serientaugliche Fertigung. Daneben besetzt das Haus laufend Rollen in Supply Chain Management, IT, Qualität und Finanzen. Auch Studierende kommen unter, etwa über Praktika im Rechnungswesen oder im Maschinenbau. Auf karriere.at ist das Unternehmen mit 101 bis 500 Mitarbeitenden und über 50 ausgeschriebenen Stellen pro Jahr gelistet (abgerufen 08.08.2026); eine exakte aktuelle Kopfzahl veröffentlicht die Firma selbst nicht.
